Questions to ask your contractor
It is critical to choose a professional, licensed and well-established contractor when performing mitigation. Asking your professional contractor these six questions can ensure that you make an informed decision.
- Ask your contractor if they are a member of a local, regional or national association.
- Ask your contractor for references of past customers.
- Ask your contractor if the product you choose has an approved applicator program and if they are certified to apply the product.
- Ask your contractor who will inspect the work of the crew installing your roof.
- Ask your contractor for the names of a few of their material suppliers and call them for assurance.
It is also important to keep in mind these helpful tips to follow when hiring a contractor:
- Get at least three estimates from different licensed and insured contractors for the same job.
- Read your contract very carefully, including warranty information on any products used to strengthen your home.
- Never make full payment up front. Reputable contractors will accept payment based upon percentage of work completed.
- Obtain lien waivers to ensure that no one who supplied materials can put a lien on your home because the contractor did not pay them.
- Make sure that the products used meet code requirements in your area and all appropriate building permits have been pulled.
